Oatlands Infant School is a community school on the south side of Harrogate, with a continued Outstanding Ofsted report. The school has been at the heart of the Oatlands community for over 100 years and is very keen to continue to develop their partnership with all parents and members of the local and wider communities, believing that through these partnerships their pupils can develop as caring and responsible members of society. The website needs to act as an engaging platform to foster a productive partnership with parents as children embark on the next stage of their learning journey. The school has a very strong and active PTA, evidence of the vibrant community that this school enjoys.

The brief

The school looks to work with parents and carers to ensure an effective home-school partnership. The brief was to create a clear, easy to use website to act as a first port of call for parents to refer to upcoming events in the school and PTA calendars, recent news and classroom activities. The new website is a destination for parents, prospective parents, pupils, staff and the governing body. Technologically, the new website was to replace the slow, difficult to use content management system and a website that wasn’t visible in search engines with a system that is user friendly, enabling staff with varying levels of technical skills to update. It needed to reflect the personality and culture of the school.

Our interpretation

The previous Oatlands website had grown unwieldy and was difficult to update and navigate. It was also felt that it wasn’t representative of the feel of the school.

We chose a style branding to reflect school colour and incorporate the work of the children, enabling an engaging space of their own where they can enjoy a sense of ownership, with fun.

We restructured the navigation system to reflect the different user groups, and included separate password protected sections for staff and governor login. There are links to the ParentPay portal and to the school’s social media sites, to enable a community to share dialogue.

New efficient news and PTA diaries display details of upcoming events. This streamlines information and deflects unnecessary calls to school office while allowing staff to manage their class pages.

What we delivered

Through PTA funding, we were able to deliver a fully responsive website, with an updated brand identity. The website functions across all browsing devices to enable busy parents and staff to find the information they need wherever they are. We also delivered a full content management system, that enables office staff and teachers to update their content sections.
